Cole Palmer didn’t plan to permanently leave Manchester City but wanted a loan before his £40m transfer to Chelsea.
Despite his impactful breakthrough in the 2022/23 season, mostly as a substitute, Palmer’s potential departure arose late in the summer after notable performances in the Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup.
Speaking to Sky Sports before their 1-0 loss to Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, Palmer shared his initial plan to stay at Man City, expressing the desire for a one-year loan.
However, facing the choice to either stay or be sold, he embraced the opportunity at Chelsea and is now content with the decision.
Despite Chelsea’s struggles this season, Palmer has stood out with eight goals and four assists in 16 Premier League games, earning a senior England debut.
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino likened Palmer to Angel Di Maria, a compliment the young player appreciates, acknowledging he has a long way to go.
