Facing a reduction in playing time due to injuries and form, Anthony Martial, now in the final six months of his 2019 long-term deal, has been displaced as Erik ten Hag’s preferred ‘number nine’ by Rasmus Hojlund.
Despite interest from clubs like Marseille and Fenerbahce, as well as the Saudi Pro League, Martial is reportedly eager to remain at United and fight for his place in the short term.
While United is unlikely to extend his contract on current terms until 2025, recent discussions with Ten Hag hint that Martial’s tenure at Old Trafford might not conclude as a free agent in the coming months.
Since his £36m transfer from Monaco on summer transfer deadline day in 2015, Martial’s career at United has been a rollercoaster.
Despite a debut goal against Liverpool, he took a back seat to Ibrahimovic and Lukaku before a standout 2019/20 season.
However, his subsequent form dipped, scoring only 19 goals in three and a half years for United and one during an unsuccessful loan at Sevilla in 2022.
United’s pursuit of new signings, including Choupo-Moting, is hindered unless Martial departs this month.
Ten Hag aims to bolster the squad’s attacking options, with Jonathan David and Bundesliga striker Serhou Guirassy as potential targets, though Guirassy intends to stay at Stuttgart until the summer.
