Despite interest from Ajax, Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, and Paris Saint-Germain, the most substantial interest came from Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Initially viewed as frontrunners, Barcelona explored a deal with Fenerbahce, including favorable add-ons and a loan extension for Guler.
However, the teenager sought immediate playing time and was deterred by Barcelona’s off-field uncertainties.
With limited summer spending and struggles adhering to La Liga’s salary restrictions, Barcelona’s financial constraints influenced Guler’s decision.
Real Madrid sought manager Carlo Ancelotti’s input on Guler’s desire for first-team play, and after a conversation with the midfielder, Ancelotti approved the deal.
Despite a €17.5m release clause, Real Madrid opted for an initial €20m fee plus add-ons, influenced partly by Guler’s father, who valued him closer to €30m and aimed to respect Fenerbahce with a more fitting fee.
Guler faced early challenges with knee and thigh injuries at Real Madrid but made his debut in their 3-1 Copa del Rey victory against Arandina on Saturday night.
