Real Madrid Makes History with Impressive Defense in La Liga

Real Madrid has set a new club record by conceding only 11 goals in the first 19 games of the 2023/24 La Liga season.

Despite facing significant challenges with injuries to key defenders, including Thibaut Courtois, Eder Militao, and David Alaba, Carlo Ancelotti’s side boasts the best defensive record in La Liga.

This achievement surpasses the previous club record of 12 goals conceded midway through a 38-game season, achieved in the 1987/88 and 2019/20 campaigns, both of which ended with Madrid winning the title.

The current feat is reminiscent of the 1961/62 season when Madrid conceded 11 goals in 19 games, but the campaign was only 30 matches long at that time.

Across Europe’s top ten divisions, only Inter and Nice have conceded fewer goals at this stage, with Juventus matching Madrid’s record of 11.

Despite the absence of a definitive first-choice goalkeeper, Real Madrid’s defensive prowess remains remarkable.

Following Thibaut Courtois’ injury, the loan signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea took the helm, playing 11 games and conceding seven goals.

However, Andriy Lunin, the team’s usual deputy, has now reclaimed the starting position. The 24-year-old, whose contract expires this summer, has conceded only four goals in his eight appearances this season.

While there is optimism for Eder Militao’s return in the coming months, David Alaba is ruled out for the rest of the season, and Courtois will miss Euro 2024 due to his injury.
