From New Year’s Day, Raphael Varane is free to initiate discussions with international teams for a departure from Manchester United, following the club’s decision to forego a one-year contract extension.

Varane, who joined United from Real Madrid in 2022, was initially announced to be with the club until June 2025.

However, it has been revealed that he signed a two-year contract, with an option for a 12-month extension.

The club has opted not to trigger the extension, citing concerns over Varane’s high wages of £340,000 per week.

While United aims to negotiate a new contract to reduce wages for financial flexibility, this decision poses a risk of losing Varane on a free transfer at the season’s end.

The club’s strategy involves freeing up resources for potential summer signings and complying with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

Raphael Varane, who has drawn interest from clubs like Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, is among the Manchester United players facing the possibility of leaving for free next summer.

Alongside Varane, players including Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Anthony Martial, Jonny Evans, Hannibal Mejbri, and Tom Heaton are also out of contract. While Victor Lindelof’s deal will be extended for another year, Martial seems likely to depart without a transfer fee.

United’s decision not to trigger Varane’s contract extension aligns with their strategy to manage wages and create financial flexibility for potential signings.

Manager Erik ten Hag downplayed expectations of significant activity in the January transfer window, emphasizing the challenge of attracting top players during this period.
