Andre Onana Defended by Patrice Evra Amid Goalkeeper Comparisons

Patrice Evra, ex-Manchester United player, supported Andre Onana following the goalkeeper’s unusual concession of a free-kick against Aston Villa.

McGinn’s free-kick sailed into the United box, bouncing through into the net as Onana observed. The goal led to more criticism for the Cameroon international, who has faced a challenging beginning at Old Trafford, but Evra believes he is being unfairly treated.

The ex-full-back commented on Amazon Prime, saying, “It depends on the style of the goalkeeper. If you had Thibaut Courtois, he would have come to that ball [to stop Aston Villa’s first goal]. I played with Edwin van der Sar, I played with David de Gea. They never would have come out like that. People can point and say it’s a goalkeeper error. But I think it’s just the type of goalkeeper.”

Before the free-kick that gave Aston Villa the lead at Old Trafford, winger Leon Bailey stood beside Onana and attempted to put him off.

Shortly after that goal, the away team struck again through Leander Dendoncker, but United managed to pull off a comeback in the second half as Alejandro Garnacho scored twice and Rasmus Hojlund struck in the 82nd minute to secure a 3-2 win for Erik ten Hag’s team.
