Aston Villa Upset Title Race with Victory Over Arsenal

Aston Villa secured a historic 15th consecutive home league win by defeating Arsenal 1-0 on Saturday evening.

An early goal propelled the hosts to victory, closing the gap to a point behind Arsenal and only two points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta witnessed his team’s frustration from the stands as they missed the opportunity to reclaim the top spot following Liverpool’s win at Crystal Palace earlier in the day.

Villa started the game brightly, but Arsenal threatened with consecutive switches of play. Despite an initial scare, the hosts swiftly turned the tables. Leon Bailey’s run and cutback set up John McGinn, who coolly found the top corner from 12 yards.

As Villa started to sit off, Arsenal gained confidence, with Martinelli attempting a lob over Martinez, cleared off the line by Diego Carlos. There were indications of a potential offside in the buildup. Martinelli then pressured Konsa, feeding Havertz, whose layoff to Gabriel Jesus led to a well-held shot by Martinez.

A precise through-ball by Youri Tielemans found Ollie Watkins charging into the 18-yard box, denied by former Brentford teammate David Raya. The offside flag was raised, but tight replays suggested a debatable decision.

After halftime, Arsenal contested a penalty decision as Douglas Luiz appeared to hook Jesus’ ankle. A Saka corner, punched by Martinez onto Watkins’ head and off the post, saw Carlos thwart Saliba’s header.

Odegaard missed an opportunity, while Villa’s first second-half chance saw Raya save Digne’s attempt. Saka scored for Arsenal, but an offside flag denied the equalizer. Villa’s counter, with Diaby setting up Watkins, was again stopped by Raya.

In the final regulation minute, Arsenal thought they scored, but Havertz’s goal was disallowed due to a chaotic handball situation after a VAR review. Nketiah’s header missed the mark, securing Villa’s victory.
