Mauricio Pochettino conceded that Chelsea failed to match the energy displayed by Manchester United in their 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford.
The Chelsea manager expressed disappointment, acknowledging that his team started the game poorly and struggled to keep up with the intensity demonstrated by the Red Devils. Pochettino admitted that Manchester United was the superior side on the day.
“We created enough chances to get something from the game. We drew the first half and at 1-1 had some good chances, and should have scored and been more clinical, that was the problem.
“The second half we started well but then we conceded and again I think we missed a little bit the energy to be more aggressive. We had some chances but not enough to get back in the game again. But overall my feeling is that they were better than us and deserved the three points.”
Mauricio Pochettino admitted that the challenge of playing with less men for 60 minutes against Brighton in the previous match may have impacted Chelsea’s energy and performance in the Wednesday defeat.
Conor Gallagher’s red card just before halftime against Brighton forced Chelsea to play with ten men for the entire second half.
Pochettino highlighted the potential influence of that situation on the subsequent match against Manchester United.
