Kevin De Bruyne Included in Manchester City’s FIFA Club World Cup Squad

Kevin De Bruyne is set to return to action as he is included in Manchester City’s squad for the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia.

The midfielder has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since August and had previously likened his hamstrings to “wet kitchen towel.”

Although he expressed his aim to return in early 2024, his inclusion in the Club World Cup squad raises the possibility of an earlier comeback, even if it’s just to secure a medal in case City wins the tournament.

Goalkeepers: Ederson, Stefan Ortega, Scott Carson

Defenders: Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, John Stones, Nathan Ake, Sergio Gomez, Josko Gvardiol, Manuel Akanji, Rico Lewis

Midfielders: Kalvin Phillips, Mateo Kovacic, Jack Grealish, Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Matheus Nunes, Phil Foden

The FIFA Club World Cup commences on 12 December with host representative Al Ittihad facing Auckland City in the first round.

Manchester City, representing Europe along with Copa Libertadores winners Fluminense, advances straight to the semi-finals on 18 and 19 December. City’s semi-final opponent will be determined between Leon and Urawa Red Diamonds.

Club World Cup finals, scheduled for 22 December at King Abdullah Sports City, have historically been dominated by European teams since the tournament’s inception in 2005.

South American clubs, once frequent finalists, have seen a decline in appearances, with Corinthians in 2012 being the last non-European side to win the competition, beating Chelsea in the final.
