Lionel Messi Insists he Tried to Rejoin Barcelona Before Inter Miami Move

The iconic forward departed Paris Saint-Germain after the 2022/23 season and was initially expected to reunite with Barcelona as a free agent.

However, due to the club’s financial challenges, a return to La Blaugrana didn’t materialize.

In an interview with TIME, where Messi was honored as their Athlete of the Year, he disclosed his desire to go back to Barcelona.

Despite exploring various options, he expressed, “My first option was to return to Barcelona, but it was not possible. I tried to return, and it did not happen.” Fortuitously, Miami became the chosen destination after careful consideration with his family.

Messi clarified his decision not to return to Barcelona, citing the club’s financial constraints requiring player sales or salary reductions to accommodate his contract.

Despite being the all-time top goalscorer and winning the UEFA Champions League four times with Barcelona, practical considerations led him to explore other options.

One speculated destination with no financial limitations was the Saudi Pro League. Messi reportedly turned down a contract exceeding £300m per year from Al Hilal, choosing instead to join MLS side Inter Miami.

Reflecting on the interest from Saudi Pro League teams, Messi noted, “It is also true that later I was thinking a lot about going to the Saudi league… because of how football is growing in the country and because of the effort they are putting into creating a top competition.”

Having completed his inaugural season in North America, Messi played a pivotal role in guiding Inter Miami to a Leagues Cup triumph, marking the club’s first-ever trophy.
