Emmanuel Amunike is poised to take over the role of Super Eagles head coach, TalkFooty reports.
Peseiro faces severe backlash amidst the Super Eagles’ lackluster performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The three-time African champions managed only two points in their initial encounters against underdogs Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
According to a reliable source within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), TalkFooty has learned that Peseiro’s reign as head coach hinges solely on securing victory at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The NFF, currently facing financial constraints, is reportedly dissatisfied with the Super Eagles’ performance under his management.
The source disclosed, “Peseiro is retaining his position due to the NFF’s financial challenges. Although discontent with the team’s performance, the NFF will only retain him if the Super Eagles clinch the AFCON title in January next year.”
Even reaching the semi-final or final may not be sufficient for Peseiro to retain his role, as the source revealed, “Even if the Super Eagles make it to the semi-final or the final, he will still have to go.”
The prevailing sentiment among NFF executive members is reportedly inclined towards appointing a local coach should Peseiro fall short of meeting the specified target. Emmanuel Amunike emerges as the leading candidate due to his track record with the Golden Eaglets and the Tanzania national team.
Peseiro assumed the role of Super Eagles head coach on May 15, 2022. In his 14-game tenure, the team has secured six victories, three draws, and suffered five defeats.
