Former Brazil and Barcelona defender, Dani Alves, is facing the prospect of a nine-year prison sentence as a Spanish prosecutor pursues charges of alleged sexual assault that occurred last December. The 40-year-old, who has been in custody since his arrest in January, is accused of assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub.

Initially denying any wrongdoing, Alves later admitted to engaging in consensual sex with the accuser. The prosecutor is also seeking a restraining order against Alves after his potential release and is demanding damages of 150,000 euros (£130,500) to be paid to the woman, as reported by Sky Sports.

In August, a court in the Barcelona area formally indicted Alves, determining that there was sufficient evidence to proceed to trial. The trial date for Alves, who represented Brazil in the recent World Cup in Qatar and had his contract terminated with Mexican club UNAM after the arrest, is yet to be scheduled.

In January, Alves was transferred to a different detention center for security reasons after spending three nights at another facility holding approximately 200 inmates. The football icon, known for winning 42 major honors, including three Champions League titles with Barcelona and two Copa America titles with Brazil, is facing a serious legal challenge that could significantly impact his personal and professional life.
