With a move to Saudi Arabia still being rumoured, there is every chance that this could be Salah’s final season in the Premier League, something Liverpool fans will be dreading if this turns out to be true.

Yet Craig Burley has theorised that Liverpool are reluctant to hand Salah a new contract.

Liverpool ‘fear’ giving Salah a new contract at his age

Speaking on ESPN FC, the pundit made the claim that Liverpool might not be willing to give Salah a new bumper contract due to the winger’s age, with the attacker turning 32 this summer.

With Salah already one of Liverpool’s highest-paid players, handing the attacker an even bigger contract could be viewed as a financial misstep from the Reds, even if the forward can maintain his incredible goalscoring feats.

Burley said when asked what Liverpool are thinking when it comes to Salah’s new contract: “I think, Liverpool, I would imagine, would have some fear about going to three years. Yeah, absolutely understandable.

“There is a fear of handing out long contracts to guys who are 32, 33 years of age because this year could be great, but Casemiro is a good example how it can sort of fall off a cliff. He has this long contract on big money, and when you get in your 30s, it can change, it can change on a dime.”

Salah would be worth the financial risk for the Reds

Salah is a Liverpool legend and has shown over the last seven years why will go down as one of the club’s greatest ever players, with the 32-year-old showing no sign of slowing down just yet.

And for the Reds, handing the winger a new contract would be worth the financial risk given how good Salah still is and how important the Egyptian international is for the Anfield side.

Indeed, Salah knows he can perform at the highest level for another two or even three years, and signing a new contract would be worth it for Liverpool even if it means making the Egyptian the club’s highest-paid player ever.
