Liverpool’s pre-season ended with friendlies against Spanish pair Sevilla and Las Palmas at Anfield on Sunday.

A capacity crowd welcomed Arne Slot for the first time as his side tore apart Sevilla 4-1, before drawing 0-0 with Las Palmas behind closed doors a couple of hours later.

The Reds rotated their way through nearly their entire first-team squad in that time, handing most of their senior players final pre-season minutes before they begin their Premier League campaign.

Here’s what we learned from Liverpool’s Sunday friendlies.

Such is the sad nature of injuries, you’d be forgiven for not putting Diogo Jota in your ideal lineups under Slot.

But when he’s fit, boy does he give Liverpool some good minutes.

Jota brought Anfield to its feet with a stunning volley to open the scoring against Sevilla, providing a stark reminder that he remains probably their most natural finisher besides Mohamed Salah.

If he can stay injury free, then Jota will score aplenty under Slot. That’s for sure.

It was just as well that Liverpool’s 4-1 win was the friendly played in front of supporters, as their 0-0 stalemate with Las Palmas proved to be the damp squib of the day.

During that draw, Darwin Nunez continually drifted away into offside areas when he really ought not to have and didn’t provide as much menace as we all know he can.

When Slot was appointed as head coach, several reports claimed he had been specifically tasked with making Nunez a success on Merseyside. There’s still some way to go on that front, and fortunately for Liverpool, it’s still only August of the Dutchman’s first season and a competitive game has not yet been played.

The breakout star of Liverpool’s pre-season has been midfielder Trey Nyoni, who only turned 17 at the end of June.

He continued his summer exploits with the last goal of the day at Anfield, firing in a delicious half-volley to wrap up their victory over Sevilla.

It was a calculated hit in which Nyoni had time to weigh up his options, but decided to follow through with it and with precise timing to boot.

Nyoni’s confidence will undoubtedly have grown this pre-season, and it’s exciting to imagine what he could turn into in the year ahead.

When Luis Diaz first joined Liverpool midway through the 2021/22 season, he took the Premier League’s collective breath away.

He was dazzling, he was electric, and he looked like a suitably Liverpool kind of winger, one worth the price of admission.

But injury hampered his first two seasons at Anfield, or at least the physicality that he needed in order to play at that marvellous maximum.

Sunday’s showing saw Diaz come roaring back with that extra edge and added acceleration of his first days at Liverpool, particularly with the first of his two goals.

This is the player that has been linked with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. This is the player Liverpool should be keeping.
