Barcelona will look to be active in the transfer market this summer, with plans for a new left winger and defensive midfielder to be signed. One position that will not be addressed is goalkeeper, with the plan being to continue with Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and Inaki Pena as numbers one and two respectively.
That is despite fan concerns about both players. Ter Stegen has generated doubts for several years, despite a very strong 2022-23 campaign, which saw him pick up his first ever Zamora Trophy. Pena stepped in for the German international for a three-month period last season, and he also came under-fire for poor performances.
However, MD say that there are no plans for a goalkeeper to be signed this summer, partly because of the club’s financial situation. Nevertheless, Ter Stegen is considered “untouchable”, while Pena will also stay, barring a radical change.
Ter Stegen is highly appreciated by Hansi Flick, whom he worked with during his tenure as Germany manager. The reunion could see the 32-year-old return to his best level, something that will be needed if Barcelona are to challenge next season.
