Valencia and Spain star set for five-month lay-off following surgery on ruptured hamstring

Earlier this month, heartbreak struck for Jose Gaya when he suffered a relapse of a hamstring injury he had only just returned from. The Valencia and Spain left-back saw his chances of playing at Euro 2024 blow up in smoke, and he has since undergone surgery to rectify the problem.

Gaya suffered the original injury in March during Valencia’s trip to Villarreal. He returned to action two months later, as surgery was opted against on that occasion, as the 29-year-old wanted to be fit and available for Los Che’s final matches of the season, and also Euro 2024 duty with Spain.

Conservative treatment was chosen on that occasion, but surgery is the course of action that has now been taken. As per Relevo, the idea is for Gaya to return to action in October, although his recovery will be incredibly slow, so as not to avoid another relapse upon his return to action.

It means that Valencia will be without one of their most important players for the first couple of months of the season, while Gaya will also likely be unavailable to play in Spain’s opening four Nations League matches, which will kick off in the September international break.
