Revealed: The reasons why Xavi Hernandez wanted Barcelona to sell Robert Lewandowski

Because of Xavi Hernandez’s sacking, and Hansi Flick’s impending arrival as manager, the expectation is that a number of situations involving Barcelona players are about to change. One of those is Robert Lewandowski, who was not wanted by Xavi towards the end of his 2.5-year tenure.

Xavi wanted Lewandowski sold this summer for multiple reasons, as per Sport. Two of these were tactical, as the Polish striker was not considered to not have enough energy or intensity to lead the first line of the press. Xavi believed that Lewandowski’s off-the-ball efforts were below-par. Secondly, Xavi wanted a striker that could link the play better, which he deemed Lewandowski to be poor at.

Interestingly, the report cites information from journalist Ricard Torquemada, who told Catalunya Radio’s DTT that another reason Xavi wanted Lewandowski gone was because of his lack of empathy towards the young members of the first team squad. In the eyes of Xavi, the 35-year-old was overly-demanding towards players that are still “very tender football-wise” – a trait he did not want in a dressing room leader.

With Flick arriving, the likelihood is that Lewandowski stays for at least one more season, given that the pair worked very successfully at Bayern Munich. It remains to be seen whether a similar pattern of form can follow at Barcelona.
