Real Madrid end season by sealing 27-year record despite end of scoring run

Real Madrid closed out their La Liga campaign on Saturday evening with a 0-0 draw against Real Betis, although barely anybody noticed as Toni Kroos’ farewell to the Santiago Bernabeu took precedence over all else. It was a match that brought an end to one run though, and secured another incredible statistic.

Betis became the first side to shut Real Madrid out since Rayo Vallecano in early November, finalising a 38-game run in which Los Blancos have scored in every game, as per MD. They have also gone 32 games unbeaten since Atletico Madrid inflicted their only league defeat of the season, the third-best streak in history, and it leaves them just four games shy of Ernesto Valverde’s Barcelona, who went 36 games without loss.

As pointed out by Euan McTear though, Real Madrid avoiding defeat against Betis meant closing out an entire season without a loss at the Bernabeu. It is the first time they have gone unbeaten at home since 1997, equalling a run they have not managed for 27 years.

At home this season Real Madrid have won 20 times, and drawn five, with 62 goals scored and 15 conceded. Manager Carlo Ancelotti was keen to emphasize their defensive improvements this season, and 13 clean sheets at home speak to the difference between this season and last.
