Ghana’s Black Starlets lost 2-1 to Burkina Faso in the first semi-finals of the WAFU B U-17 tournament on Saturday.

The win saw Burkina Faso secure automatic qualification for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.

It was the Black Starlets’ first defeat in the regional tournament.

The team’s coach and former Black Stars player, Laryea Kingston, announced his resignation as Ghana U-17 handler, following the team’s failure to qualify for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations and, by extension, the World Cup.

In a post-match press conference, Kingston expressed his disappointment that the team couldn’t achieve their target and concluded the session by announcing his resignation.

According to Kingston, he had performed well since his appointment, initially as an assistant before becoming the head coach, but felt it was time to move on.

“After we came back from Russia, that’s when I decided that whether we win and qualify or not, I’m moving on. After this tournament, I’m resigning as the U-17 coach. I have made that decision already,” he said.
