Alan Shearer has snubbed Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes while naming Newcastle United’s best player.

The Magpies finished seventh in the Premier League in the 2023/24 season. It was a difficult campaign for Eddie Howe’s side because of all the injuries.

Newcastle, however, did as well as they could with the players they had, and one of them seems to have blown Shearer away – more than both Guimaraes and Isak.

Alan Shearer says Anthony Gordon was Newcastle United’s best player in 2023/24

Newcastle United signed Anthony Gordon from Everton in January 2023.

There were a lot of doubts over the Englishman’s quality and whether he warranted the £45 million fee (Sky Sports) Eddie Howe’s side paid for him.

After nearly 16 months as a Newcastle player, it’s safe to say that those doubts have been thrown out of the window. Signing him has proved to be a masterstroke.

Gordon had a fantastic season for the Toon.

He scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions, and his performances have blown club legend Alan Shearer away.

The pundit went as far as saying Gordon is Newcastle United’s ‘best player’, ahead of the club’s two biggest stars Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak.

On The Rest is Football podcast, Gary Lineker first raved about Gordon.

“I have to say that I think Anthony Gordon has been absolutely brilliant in his first proper season at Newcastle,” Lineker said.

Shearer quickly replied: “He has been Newcastle’s best player this season!”

Newcastle could soon have a big Anthony Gordon problem

Anthony Gordon has had an unbelievable season at Newcastle.

23 direct goal contributions while playing for a side who haven’t had the greatest season is just an incredible return. The fact that he can play across the frontline makes him even more valuable.

However, the problem Newcastle could soon face with Gordon is that he will enter the final two years of his £60,000-a-week (Capology) contract in July.

The Magpies have to tie him down to a new deal – not to just to secure his future but also to protect his value in case he wants to leave.

Liverpool have been linked with a move to sign Gordon. That’s the last problem Newcastle need right now, especially with both Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak attracting interest from Arsenal.
