Gabriel Agbonlahor has now shared his opinion on Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison’s chances of making the England squad for Euro 2024.

Gareth Southgate’s squad will be announced at around 2pm today, and James Maddison does seem well placed to be involved.

Southgate is expected to name around 30 players in today’s England training squad and it would be a huge surprise if Maddison was overlooked.

However, once the group is then trimmed down in the coming weeks things then aren’t so certain for a host of attacking players.

The Tottenham talisman will be competing against the likes of Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze and perhaps even Manchester City’s Jack Grealish for a role, such is the level of competition.

And with that in mind, Gabriel Agbonlahor has been sharing his honest thoughts on talkSPORT this morning.

The pundit listed the excellent talent Southgate has to choose from in attacking areas and admitted he was worried for Maddison.

Gabriel Agbonlahor thinks Eberechi Eze could take James Maddison’s England spot

As stated, it would be a huge surprise if Southgate left out Maddison, but given his Tottenham form did dip in the second half of the season it’s certainly not impossible.

Indeed, Gabriel Agbonlahor was concerned, and also name-dropped Cole Palmer as a player who could now be ahead.

He explained: “I look at the talent we have got that can be chosen in the attacking part of the field, Foden, Palmer, Bowen, Grealish, Rashford, Gordon, Watkins, Toney, Kane, Bellingham, Eze, Saka, Maddison.

“Of the talent we have got available, the only player I am worried for at that amount of players is Maddison because I feel like Eze has been outstanding, Palmer has been outstanding, and for that position, the number 10 position, will Maddison be the one that could be in a bit of trouble?”

Of course, it still would seem incredibly harsh for Maddison to drop out, regardless of his slight dip at Tottenham.

The playmaker can still change a game in a moment, the kind of player England would be blessed to have on the bench.

Southgate’s choices are bordering on an embarrassment of riches, but Maddison certainly shouldn’t be left out in any circumstance.

All that being said, Tottenham do have the opportunity to sign an ‘electric’ midfielder on loan this summer who could dovetail brilliantly with the England man.
