Newcastle United are likely to be busy in the summer transfer window as they look to kick on following a somewhat underwhelming 2023/24 campaign.

The Magpies finished fourth last season to qualify for the Champions League, but they’ll struggle to make the Europa Conference League this term.

Newcastle’s squad was pushed to its limits this season and will need to increase their strength in depth to compete on three or four fronts next term.

The Magpies may well look to bolster their attacking ranks amid speculation linking Callum Wilson with a move away from St James’ Park.

At the same time, Newcastle need to be mindful of Financial Fair Play regulations going into next season.

Now, a report has emerged claiming the Magpies have joined Chelsea in the race for a £19million-rated South American forward.

The player in question is Paraguay international Ramon Sosa, who plies his trade for Argentine club Talleres de Cordoba.

What has been reported about Newcastle and Ramon Sosa?

Journalist Hernan Castillo, via Extra, has spoken about Newcastle’s interest in a player also on the radar of the Stamford Bridge outfit.

“I also know that Newcastle was interested, but the first one to make some progress is the people from Chelsea,” Extra quote Castillo as saying to Futbol a lo Grande.

“I don’t think it’s advanced, I don’t think it’s anything yet because the Premier League is still to finish this weekend.

“But it’s at least more than sounded out, to put it that way. It’s not just a talk that took place, but there have already been a couple of talks.”

Castillo also reported that Sosa recently rejected proposals from Argentine giants Boca Juniors and River Plate because he wants to make the move to Europe.

Although Chelsea are a difficult suitor to go up against, Newcastle may have an advantage in that Sosa’s fellow Paraguay international Miguel Almiron plays for the Magpies.

The two players have shared the pitch four times already for their nation. Now, let’s see whether they can also become teammates at club level.
