Ange Postecoglou hasn’t had the easiest of weeks.
The Australian was clearly seething in his post-match press conference after the Manchester City game on Tuesday, while footage did the rounds on social media of the Tottenham manager actually shouting at a fan during the game.
It’s very rare to see any manager interact with a fan in the stands, but Postecoglou couldn’t hide his anger during this incident.
Speaking on the Highbury Squad YouTube channel. Sky Sports’ James Green has been discussing Postecoglou’s incident with this supporter, and he’s shared why Postecoglou got so angry.
Why Ange Postecoglou snapped at Tottenham fan
Green said that he’s heard two explanations on this matter from people close to the Tottenham manager.
One explanation is that the fan was asking the manager to throw the game during the match in order to stop Arsenal from winning the league, a story we’ve already heard elsewhere.
However, another side of this story is that this fan actually began to become abusive towards Ange Postecoglou during the match, hence why the manager snapped.
“You have probably seen the incident with the fan during the game, there are two versions of that,” Green said.
“This is from someone close to Ange. One is that the fan constantly berated him to say blow the game and we don’t want Arsenal winning. The other is that he became quite abusive towards Ange and Ange snapped basically.”
Tottenham fan was in the wrong
Ange Postecoglou probably shouldn’t have snapped at a fan like this, but, at the same time, it’s the fan who is ultimately in the wrong.
You go to a stadium to support your team, not to berate the manager and ask him to lose the match on purpose.
If you secretly want Tottenham to lose for rivalry reasons, keep that to yourself or at least have the courtesy to be quiet, don’t spend 90 minutes rubbing it in the manager’s face or becoming abusive.
Postecoglou’s reaction was perhaps a tad too emotional, but it’s hard to blame him for getting angry on this occasion.
