David Moyes is leaving West Ham at the end of the season.

The manager himself has confirmed that he’s going at the end of this campaign, and, by all accounts, Julen Lopetegui will be his replacement.

Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, Michail Antonio has been discussing Moyes’ impending departure from West Ham and how the squad found out their manager was leaving.

According to Antonio, the West Ham squad actually discovered Moyes was leaving through Sky Sports News rather than being told directly.

Antonio spoke about how he found out his manager was departing.

“I found out the same way everyone else did. We had the day off on the Monday. I think he would’ve wanted to speak to us himself, but we found out by looking at Sky Sports saying that the club and him are parting ways. It was a weird one,” Antonio said.

“Obviously you’ve had the chance to speak to him since? What’s been said?” Antonio said.

“He pulled us and said that as much as everyone knows I’m leaving at the end of the season, I want us to be putting in performances, I don’t want another performance like we did against Chelsea,” Antonio said.

“He’s enjoying every moment in training with us, he’s said he’s had some of the best moments in his life and he’s happy that he’s done everything he’s done at the club.

“He has no anger towards the club or the management, he’s ready to move on now.”

David Moyes deserved better

As Antonio says, the fact that Moyes’s departure was handled like this is very strange.

The Scot has earned the right to be called a West Ham legend, and he deserved the chance to tell his players directly that he was going.

Of course, it’s hard to keep secrets in football these days, but, at the same time, West Ham should’ve been more mindful about this information leaking before Moyes had a proper chance to address his players.

Moyes deserved more than for his squad to find out he was leaving through Sky Sports.
