Tottenham Hotspur are now out of contention for fourth place in the Premier League after losing 2-0 to Manchester City on Tuesday night.

This was a game with a lot at stake for both Spurs and the Citizens in terms of their hopes for the season.

However, at the same time, there were some Tottenham fans that actively wanted their team to lose.

If Tottenham had beaten City, the result would’ve handed Arsenal the advantage in the Premier League title race.

This made for an almost surreal atmosphere at the game. As well as the away fans, there were also some Spurs supporters willing City to win.

Journalist Sean Walsh, who was at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, noted this from the off.

As early as the third minute, he heard boos from the South Stand after Cristian Romero won a foul against Erling Haaland when the latter was through on goal.

“This is so weird to be at,” he wrote on X.

Walsh also noted both sets of fans singing disparaging chants about Arsenal throughout the match.

Although Tottenham played fairly well on the night and Man City were far from their best, the visitors once again did enough to get over the line.

Haaland opened the scoring early on in the second half before converting a late penalty to put the Citizens on the brink of a fourth consecutive title.

Ange Postecoglou criticises Tottenham ‘foundations’ after Man City loss

In the aftermath of the game, Postecoglou said he wasn’t happy with the “foundations” at Tottenham.

“Outside, inside, everywhere,” he told football.london. “It’s been an interesting exercise.

“It’s just my observations mate. I’m not going to tell you, because it’s for me. I’m the one who’s got to do it.

“You can make your own assessments of what’s happened.

“I understand. I probably misread the situation as to what I think is important in your endeavour to become a winning team, but that’s ok. That’s why I’m here.”

Spurs will now see out the season with a trip to already-relegated Sheffield United on Sunday afternoon.
