Real Madrid probably wouldn’t have imagined that Karim Benzema’s only natural replacement for Karim Benzema would be a 33-year-old Joselu Mato, and still less that the on-loan Espanyol forward would score a brace to put them into the Champions League final. However the veteran forward has written himself into Real Madrid history. It looks as if he will remain at the club, but Los Blancos are encouraging him to listen to offers.

As per Relevo, Real Madrid are happy with his contributions, and will execute his €1.5m buy option. Not least because even if he wants to leave, they could likely make a profit on him, and the Euros could see his value rise even further. They are happy to keep him, but with the arrivals of Kylian Mbappe and Endrick Felipe nearing, Los Blancos have told him to consider other opportunities where he might have more game time.

For his part Joselu has no problem with the competition. He is happy to play his role as an impact substitute, taking his chances where they come, and aware that next season Real Madrid will be six competitions. Manager Carlo Ancelotti is also happy with him, and is keen for him to continue. Los Blancos are also willing to give him a multi-year deal, despite normally only contracting over-thirties for one season.

It looks likely that Joselu will end up staying at the Santiago Bernabeu, having initially left the club with just one appearance to his name as a youngster. He has not missed an opprtunity to highlight how grateful he is for the opportunity, or how much he is enjoying it. From Real Madrid’s perspective, no matter how good Endrick Felipe is, there is no doubt that Joselu can do things he cannot, and those traits have been useful for Los Blancos this season.
