Manchester United are eyeing a move for a Manchester City-owned player, according to a recent report.

United have endured a tough season under the stewardship of Erik ten Hag and defensively, they’ve sustained a number of injuries.

That’s undoubtedly disrupted their rhythm and as such, they find themselves in eighth place and potentially without European football next term.

Ahead of the fast-approaching summer transfer window, club chiefs are targeting a move for an ‘outstanding’ defender.

Manchester United target Yan Couto

Man United are targeting a move for Yan Couto, according to Italian outlet Tutto Juve.

Couto has enjoyed a sensational season at LaLiga high-flyers Girona on loan from Manchester City and is expected to be subjected to a lot of interest in the summer.

The 21-year-old, who has been capped three times by Brazil, has a whopping 10 assists from right-back, helping his side to qualify for the Champions League.

Girona currently reside in second place two points ahead of third-placed Barcelona, who have played a game fewer.

City are expected to move him on in the summer for a fee of around £34m, with Juventus, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich all keeping tabs.

Manchester United should focus on other areas

Admittedly, Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are far from world-class, but they are a good pair of right-backs.

There is little doubt that Couto would be an upgrade but is that really an area of priority for United, who may have to operate on a limited budget to keep in line with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Two central defenders, a midfielder and a winger are all positions which need to be addressed before looking at improving at right-back.

So, perhaps they should allocate funds elsewhere.
