Matt Doherty has played with some fantastic players during his career.

The Irishman has played for the likes of Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, and he’s seen his fair share of world-class talent during that time.

Speaking to Wolves’ official TikTok page, Doherty was asked to name the best player he’d ever played with.

Inevitably, Doherty chose Harry Kane as his greatest ever teammate. However, interestingly, he also gave a nod to Gareth Bale after spending a season on loan with Tottenham back in 2020/21.

Gareth Bale is one of Matt Doherty’s greatest teammates

Doherty spoke about playing with Bale.

“Who is the best player you have ever played with?” Doherty was asked.

“Gareth Bale was top, I had a little stint in Spain where I played with Griezmann and Morata, but there’s only one really, Harry Kane,” Doherty said.

Gareth Bale is an all-time great

Gareth Bale may not have been at his very best when he returned to Tottenham for that loan spell, but make no mistake about it, he’s one of football’s all-time greats.

A five-time Champions League winner who has scored decisive goals in two finals, the Welshman is perhaps the greatest British footballer to ever lace up a pair of boots.

In terms of a CV, there aren’t many in world football who can compete with Bale.

Unfortunately, that loan spell in 2020/21 wasn’t as good as it should have been. Jose Mourinho used Bale sparingly during his time at the club, while the absence of fans in the stadium made his return feel that bit less special.

Bale is a Tottenham legend, but his legacy at Spurs as forged way before he ever shared a pitch with Doherty in north London.

It’s a shame that Bale’s loan spell wasn’t that spectacular, but he clearly still had some magic in his boots, as Doherty says.
